The Big Chess Day

What Sets Us Apart?

01 / Bespoke Feedback and Next Steps

Every child receives a personalised assessment of their chess abilities, highlighting strengths and areas for development.

02 / Structured Tournament Experience

Participants take part in a professionally run, six-round chess tournament using digital clocks and official rules.

03 / Expert Coaching for Every Level

Children are guided by experienced, DBS-checked coaches in carefully grouped sessions tailored to beginner, intermediate, and advanced players.

  • The event is designed for children aged between 7 and 13, from complete beginners to experienced young players. Children are grouped by age and ability to ensure they feel confident, supported, and appropriately challenged throughout the day.

  • No. Prior tournament experience is not required. Tournament rules, clocks, and etiquette are clearly explained before play begins, making this event an excellent introduction to competitive chess for newer players.

  • Ability groups are formed using information provided during registration, combined with informal assessment during the coaching sessions. Tournament sections are split into A (experienced) and B (beginner) categories within each age group to ensure fair and enjoyable competition.

  • Children should bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing. All chess equipment, learning materials, and snacks are provided.

If your child has any allergies or specific dietary requirements, we kindly ask parents to include suitable food or snacks in the kit their child brings on the day, to ensure their needs are met safely and comfortably.

  • Parents are welcome to drop off children after registration. Parents are invited to return for the prize giving at 6:00 pm.

  • Yes. All head coaches hold Enhanced DBS checks, and the event operates a strict sign-in and sign-out system. The adult-to-child ratio is at least 1:10, and a designated first aider will be present throughout the day.

  • Yes. Every child will receive a bespoke assessment of their chess abilities, prepared by our coaching team based on performance, understanding, and decision-making demonstrated during the event. The assessment report will be sent to the parents/guardians on their provided email address within 5-7 working days.

In addition, medals and awards are presented to every participant, recognising effort, learning, and participation.

  • Yes. Common food allergies and dietary needs are considered when planning refreshments.

If a specific dietary requirement cannot be accommodated, parents will be informed in advance so alternative arrangements can be made.

  • Yes, a photographer will be present. Parental consent will be requested in advance, for marketing use of the images and videos captured during the events.

  • After the event, each parent will receive a detailed assessment outlining their child’s chess level, strengths, and recommended next steps.

Based on this assessment, participants will be invited to join weekly LDN Chess squad sessions, with groups organised according to chess ability and experience. Invitations will be sent post-event with clear guidance on the most suitable group for each child.
